@CityofStJohns should tax airbnbs like they're home-based businesses... because they are. they should also levee a tax if apartment is vacant for more than 6 months and watch landlords drop their prices ☺️ #NLPoli

John Abbott The availability of affordable housing is reaching or has reached a critical level. I am aware of an individual who is currently 4 years on the waiting list for NL Housing and as a result is forced to live on $85 a month from income support. #nlpoli

In case you missed it, click the link below to hear Interim NDP Leader Jim Dinn on VOCM Open Line yesterday talking about how housing, one of the social determinants of health, has to be top of mind for government. #nlpoli #nlndp soundcloud.com/vocm/sets/vocm…

An update: @CityofStJohns directed Mike O'Dea yesterday morning to remove the snow he placed here & this is what the mother fucker did. His threatening behaviour does nothing but make me more determined to ensure he's being forced to play by the rules in every single way.

If you’re suggesting the answer to curbing the increase in dt crime is to have RNC get them off the streets, you must also demand more resources for our justice system (courts, legal aid & corrections) in order to handle the increase in cases. It’s not as simple as you think.

While the rates of chronic homelessness may appear to have gone down, it's essential to acknowledge that this decrease is not necessarily due to people being housed. Rather, it's possible that individuals have been recategorized as “inactive” as a result of lost contact.

Staying in the #Maritimes, refugees, single moms and seniors in #StJohns are 2x more likely to be in core housing need. there's no housing need >$1,400/m, but there is a deficit of over 5,000 homes costing under $1,400/m.Dive into the data here: bit.ly/3WCaypu #nlpoli

If you spend any time at the New Gower/Barter's Hill Intersection, you know it's very popular for pan handling. If I have $, I always give them some. If not, I still put window down & say hello. 1 of the guys is very quiet, doesn't approach, just smiles & puts his cup out. 1/

Some street based sex workers in my hood know they can ring my video doorbell if a car/John is giving creepy vibes. Doing so tricks the John into thinking they're not actually soliciting & scares them off. It's been months since it's happened but there's been 2 this week.

Oddly fitting that this article would be released today - on this day last year, funding for Blue Door Thrive ended. Haven’t heard much from Government of Newfoundland & Labrador in regards to even acknowledging the needs of folks in the province. I rarely feel bitter, but today I do.

Thank you @jphillyard for informing me about community land trusts as a grassroots response the lack of #affordablehousing. This was a very informative session showcasing innovative projects across Canada we could easily replicate here. impactunited.ca/conversations-…
