You can greatly help owls and other birds and animals by not cutting or trimming trees in spring and summer during the nesting season (its better for the trees, too!). Consider leaving dead trees standing (when safe), they provide amazing homes for wildlife as they hollow.

Yesterday the US Supreme Court gutted the Clean Water Act. The new rule excludes ephemeral waters, many springs and wetlands. For AZ & the Southwest this means a 90-95% reduction in protections for waters and the people and wildlife that rely on them. 🤬

Also, if you do go enjoy a state park and want to bring your canine companion: Follow the rules for dogs, please! Keep them on a leash to help protect these sites.

Surfers in Santa Cruz, California, have been victims of a crime at sea: boardjacking. The culprit is a 5-year-old sea otter, who has a knack for riding the waves after committing longboard larceny. Now wildlife officials are hoping to apprehend her. 🦦 nyti.ms/3XP8KLN

The front page of tomorrow's The Daily Tar Heel – I shed many tears while typing up these heart-wrenching text messages sent and received by UNC students yesterday. Our campus was on lockdown for more than three hours. Beyond proud of this cover and the team behind it.

As fall migration brought a pulse of birds through Chicago early Thursday, a single building killed a staggering 964 birds. It's an extreme case of an all-too-common phenomenon & has amplified calls for broader changes to stop preventable collision deaths. audubon.org/news/more-1000…

One of my very first college journalism assignments (👋 Marla Krause!) was to write an obit for a famous person. I had OJ Simpson and still remember my lede. "Orenthal James 'O.J.' Simpson, whose fame on the football field was matched only by his infamy off of it, has died."
