Happy to report that NZSA folks party as hard as The Australian Society of Anaesthetists folks. Dr Nav Sidhu may have put some intriguing ideas out that may interest Tanya. Overall - glad I crossed the ditch and presented at #NZASM24! Snagged a photo with Ki Jinn Chin + Dr Nav Sidhu 🥳 X meetup!

First time in NZ and it’s impressive how people integrate and respect Māori culture. Significant number of speakers at #NZASM24 were conversant in the language - not just perfunctory greetings. Visited a church and some songs were in Māori language. We have much to learn in AU!

Walked into a 🇫🇷 restaurant in AKL and was waiting. Delightful chap joined the line and I passed the msg along - “might be a while!”. Said he’s up for sharing a table - so we did. Most delightful meal ensued. Talked about life, geopolitics and everything else. Serendipitous. 😊

Do you consent for postop cognitive decline? When more than half of patients aged > 60 y undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery had some form of neurocognitive disorder 5 y after surgery, could the risk of cognitive decline outweigh the risks of surgery?

The NSW mental health system is in crisis under the Minns Labor Government. But for Queensland, “never let a crisis go to waste” as they now start to poach our state’s staff psychiatrists - with ads in today’s The Sydney Morning Herald and The Daily Telegraph

Hot off the press in 𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘢! All VL designs outperform DLs in efficacy, safety, and quality. Channelled VLs rank highest for most outcomes. HAVLs & channelled VLs offer better views than Mac-VLs. #airway #anaesthesia bit.ly/3FzK1WL

Spent the week off visiting a friend (and now trauma patient) in the 'gong and caught up with a few folks at TWH. Chuffed I got to spend time with the folks that made it home! Sadly still can't convince Bruce Ashford to switch to BSky though.

Sometimes the best intervention is... presence. Sat with a patient navigating deep trauma this week. 20 minutes of just listening on the pain round. Her physical pain presentation faded. Reminded of the power of human connection and why we do what we do :)

BOA response to The Times (1st May, 2025) article suggesting orthopaedic surgery is primarily suited to men due to the physical nature of the work: “outdated and derogatory.” BOA President Mark Bowditch: “Skill, judgement and teamwork—not gender—define a good surgeon.” Read it

Interesting chat with mates from SG. How do training programs handle the trade offs between selecting for service provision (bearing in mind a training program should train) vs non-technical skills which are harder to train? #MedEd

Separately - feedback says that I need work in appearing more confident in my answers during interviews - been practicing. Anyone has interview coaches or performance psychologists in AU to recommend? Which of the two is more useful? Am already aware of frameworks eg SPIES, STAR

1/ Most people think the heart drives circulation. But what if that’s backwards? Anderson’s model flips the whole idea of cardiac output on its head — and it changes how you think about fluid, flow, and failure. 🧵👇 #physiology #FOAMed #MedTwitter #criticalCare #cardiacOutput
