During space shuttle, integrated simulations combined astronaut crews and flight controllers in a sim lasting up to 72 hrs. We use NASA’s team and chronological approach for scripting/execution adaptable to any scenario & illness progression unseen in other nursing/medical sims.

Nurses & HCPs work in complex environments where pace & significance vary from fast to slow & routine to critical. Multiple patients/events compete for the same priorities; actions can mean life or death. Our holistic 48 & 72 hour integrated sims train to this same dynamic.

A nursing sim must reflect the centrality of nursing. We ascribe to Margaret Newman’s view of nursing: “caring in the human health experience.”

When do nursing students get to discuss their patients’ care with an actual provider without a nurse safety net to assure that accurate/relevant information is relayed? In our integrated simulations they do.

Handoff: Putting students on the receiving end of information in our 48 & 72-hour sim makes them responsible for asking the questions they need to provide quality nursing care for their patients on their sim shift. It is not just an exercise.

In our 72-hour Integrated Simulations, we focus on preparing graduating students for complex hospital-based nursing practice. youtu.be/TBGlI0hruzM

We design a realistic, holistic, simulated hospital environment that provides an experience that is as much like actual nursing practice as possible.

Oops! Someone forgot to clamp the blood when finished! Students learn from mistakes in the sim, even minor ones (and won't have to learn this in actual practice).

How do you really grow nursing students’ critical thinking skills? With long duration training scenarios with multiple competing patient priorities.

Just finished our first ever combo ED-Med-Surg 72-hour continuous integrated sim. Two integrated units with students getting experiences in both places. What an experience!

Complexity. 72-hour integrated ED/Med-Surg sim: 160 page scenario script; 16 patient scenarios running continuously at one time all 72 hours (8 in ED and 8 in Med-Surg). Life threatening issues; stroke, MI, fentanyl OD; transfers, handoffs, teamwork. All in a days work @ SCHOLAR.

A quote from SCHOLAR's co-founder from the article, Simulating Nursing, about us in the TMC pulse in 2018 about our 72-hour integrated simulation's beginning, my research program at Texas Woman's University, which was foundational for SCHOLAR.

Headed to San Antonio for the Sigma Convention. Visit us at booth 512 in the Exhibit Hall during the convention. Excited to see all the Sigma nurses!

Had a great time at the Sigma Convention in San Antonio. Much interest, even amazement that our simulation approach (72-hour continuous simulated patient care unit/hospital) is even possible. Comments from hospital educators and nursing faculty that our approach is much needed.
