One of the problems with this diagram is that it is missing a crucial dimension: time. When it comes to price gouging in emergencies, that’s a pretty big problem.

If deep learning can predict weather better than an explicit physics simulation, does that mean that deep learning is more "fundamental" than physics? Or that nothing is fundamental?

I miss the days when we evaluated algorithms rather than models. Rather than "how well does model M do?", it should be "given data D and compute C, how well does running algorithm A on D with C do?" I don't think we can get scientific clarity unless we do the latter.

The Webb telescope recently set its sights on a little piece of the night sky, capturing thousands of galaxies in a cluster 10 billion light years away. Every tiny dot in this image (obvious stars aside) is a cosmic megalopolis that may be home to millions of civilizations.

David Lynch gave us the language we needed to better articulate the indescribable strangeness of our shared reality. “Lynchian” is so overused because it’s a viscerally understandable word without any known synonyms. I can’t imagine a more beautiful artistic legacy than that.

Iranians in Iran are putting out emergency advisories right now on how to protect from potential radiation after the US bombed Iran’s lawful civilian nuclear facilities. What was an apocalyptic nightmare is now a potential reality for millions of Iranians, funded by our taxes.

A vast network of Israeli spy tech, built by software engineers who cut their teeth writing code for the IDF to enforce Israeli apartheid, is being sold to police forces and security services across the west who use it to intercept communications and hack phones 🧵

Today, Los Angeles and the Bay Area will see 130 flights in both directions, equivalent to a plane departing every 6.5 minutes for 18 hours a day. Hard to argue it's not a perfect candidate for fast trains.
