The £25m fine Drax have volunteered to pay is a mere 1% of the annual subsidies they are hoping to receive from UK Gov for "transitional support". No excuse for the UK's largest CO2 emitter.

Really worrying news for nature-friendly farmers. Arguably the best value for money in the entire agri budget. Nothing else delivers a resilient food system, space for nature to thrive, climate action, clean water, and air, healthy soils and support rural economies...

Great to see leadership from David Lammy addressing the scale and urgency of the twin nature and climate crises! We need to see action for nature rolled out with the same pace and thought as renewables. Perhaps we could start with an end to biomass logging and burning?

Instead of investing billions in propping up the polluting bioenergy industry, the UK Gov must invest in genuine solutions to the nature and climate emergency, like: ✅restoring peatlands ✅creating woodlands ✅supporting nature-friendly farming #BigBadBioenergy #StopBurningTrees

Scientists in tears about how the collapse of the AMOC will devastate the climate (see thread below), all while Tory leadership debating just how far they will roll back on Climate policy. Feels like I'm living on two different planets. Unfortunately, there is no Planet B.

6/11 What about Drax? The clean power mission can be met without using biomass from Drax. The former coal power station at Drax uses imported biomass and receives a large subsidy set to end in 2027. Scientific evidence shows emissions from biomass power are significant.

Sir Keir Starmer, your government promised bold action on climate and nature - but this isn’t it. ❌ It’s a move that risks tearing up our chances for a future where nature, people, and the economy thrive.

The UK Govt has agreed a funding deal with the wood-burning Drax power station claiming it will halve subsidies. But biomass isn't a long-term solution. This must mark the start of a rapid phase-out. We need commitment to truly green energy that avoids damaging nature & climate

The Government recently claimed that it had *HALVED* subsidies for large biomass generators. 🧵 on how accurate that claim is.

Great the Climate Change Committee is calling to end imported wood for energy – but the bioenergy plans need a rethink. 3% of UK land for bioenergy could harm nature and food security, and continuing subsidies for polluting biomass locks us into an unsustainable path.

Today, 82 UK civil society organisations published an open letter calling on the Prime Minister to increase UK climate finance and fund it by fairly taxing the largest polluters and wealthiest in our society. You can read the full letter here: docs.google.com/document/d/1wL… 1/4
