Powerful personal essay on MS-13 and deportations. "Reactionary mass deportations do not keep us safe, and the government’s actions today can have severe long-term consequences for the U.S.." Thank you Tangle, Rebekah Spicuglia. readtangle.com/otherposts/i-l…

1/ Last week, a woman reached out to me to submit a reader essay to Tangle. She told me that MS-13 had brutally killed her 17-year-old son, and she wanted to share her perspective on what was happening now. I wasn't sure what to expect, but (obviously) said she had my attention.

2/ Her son's murder happened in 2015 and was extraordinarily brutal (he was attacked with machetes and then killed via gunshot wound). Since then, Rebekah Spicuglia has been obsessing over MS-13 — following news stories, trials, etc... seeking justice. Learning.

3/ So, when I saw the outline and direction of her piece, I have to say I was pretty shocked. I was expecting something making the case for the deportations we are seeing now. Instead, the piece was about her *opposition* to them, with some very interesting reasons why.

4/ Most interestingly, she made an argument for why these deportations make communities like hers LESS safe, not more safe, which is not an argument I'd heard advanced anywhere else.

END/ The piece is thoughtful and nuanced. I'm certain many people will disagree with her conclusions, but you absolutely cannot question her motives. I'd appreciate anyone who reads and shares to add a valuable lens to this debate: readtangle.com/otherposts/i-l…

I lost my son Oscar to MS-13, but I’m still against deporting people to prison in El Salvador without due process. Calling for ALL to be released. 🙏 Thanks Tangle for sharing our story 💜 readtangle.com/otherposts/i-l…
