The IBHS Hail Study team collected data on a supercell near Lodge Pole, Montana on Wednesday. Understanding hailstone characteristics in the field allows IBHS to accurately replicate hail in the lab for testing to improve building components. #ibhshail2021 #hail #MTwx

It's official! At 6.416 inches in diameter, the Hondo Hailstone is now a new Texas State Record. IBHS Hail Study 3D scanned the stone to help collect a precise dimension and digitally preserve its unique shape. #TXwx #ibhshail2021 #hail

This morning, #IBHSHail23 3D scanned a hailstone in Mansfield, TX that fell Monday night right into a homeowner’s patio chair! At the scan this morning, the stone checked in at 307.48 grams with a maximum diameter of 5.23 inches.

After 3D scanning last night’s hailstones from Roll, OK, IBHS Hail Study has surpassed 200 hailstone scans! These data have opened new doors in hail science advancing understanding of hailstone growth, mass-size relationships, aerodynamics, shapes, how radar sees hail, and more.
