Thoughtful & detailed account by @zoesqwilliams.bsky.social on why the proposed job cuts at Goldsmiths speak to a much wider attack on critical and creative education. Important final sentence: “I don’t think it’s a done deal” theguardian.com/education/2024…

"most of all it is time to remove the vocabulary of the market place, the student as customer and the ethos of competition in what needs to be re-framed as a public good."

🚨Starmer forced to stop his attack on Diane Abbott. We've seen this week what he will do in Government with unchecked power. This win shows we can pressure Labour from the left. Join our movement to elect independents and Greens to hold him to account wedeservebetter.uk

The most benign interpretation of this week’s brutal targeting of the Labour left would suggest that Starmer is the creature of a political project he does not fully understand. My analysis for Middle East Eye: middleeasteye.net/opinion/keir-s…

We're up and running with fieldwork for the After Last Orders? project on pub closures! Yesterday's site visit with Robert Deakin to one of our eight case studies for the project. Talking to residents and hearing how the pub is part of the village's history and sense of place.

Really interesting, thoughtful paper from Robert Deakin at #drinkingspaces24. Focusing on a restored(?) pub in Poplar that is also a community hub and heritage project, Robert asks whether pub loss & nostalgia can be something other than conservative melancholy or conviviality

Really enjoyed attending this BSA Alcohol Studies and drinkingstudies event yesterday, in a beautiful (and very relevant) venue in Nottingham. Interesting papers from different disciplinary perspectives, with very thoughtful engagement. Thanks Dr Claire Markham 🐈📚 for organising.

This 20 min audio essay is a great analysis of the contemporary politics of labour and migration in Britain and what to expect from the new Labour government if, as seems to be happening, Starmer tries to replicate the New Labour approach. A very important intervention.

Great images of London's modernist estate architecture here. I especially like the shot of the 1960/70s section of the Lansbury estate - often seen as the 'ugly' addition to the Festival of Britain part and due to demolished. I'd never appreciated it. londonist.com/london/housing…
