My Old Front Line Podcast isn't scripted so I'm actually enjoying reading the new podcast transcripts provided by Apple Podcasts, and reading this bit again about the Great War veterans I knew brought a lump to my throat, just as when I was recording it. I was so lucky back then.

This is the world's oldest colour film. It was filmed by inventor Edward Turner 123 years ago, between 1901 & 1902 in Brighton & Hove, Houslow and Knightsbridge, London. Edward died suddenly in 1903 aged just 29. His historic colour films were only re-discovered in 2012.

It's the final week of Barnsley Book festival and what a book festival it's been! We're really excited to welcome Richard van Emden to Library @ the Lightbox on Saturday 23rd March at 2.30pm for our final event.

Up at the Steenbeek in front of Langemarck paying respects to Harry Patch and his 7th DCLI comrades. What a lovely man he was. Such fond memories of our times together on the battlefield. It’s only now now I realise what an honour it truly was.

As it's #WorldBookDay I must select a book from my favourite author and #WW1 Historian Richard van Emden. The 2021 revised edition of Boy Soldiers is a culmination of decades of work and research by the author on this subject (and his hobby!).
It really is a masterpiece.

Wow, yesterday I saw this amazing piece of #Roman history at the British Museum’s ‘Legion’ exhibition. It’s the only known surviving example of a semi-cylindrical shield used by Roman legionaries!

Crime! It has always been around. This particularly dark and egregious episode took place in 1933. For it to make the London newspapers only goes to underline the seriousness of the man’s actions!!!

Amazing. Pic of Lt David Brand, Scots Guards in trenches hanging on wall of the home he left to go to the WF in #Greatwar . Killed in 1918, his name is on war memorial you can see in background in Newport on Tay. Pic was in album I bought & I sent it to family who now reside there

The theft and sale of Old Contemptibles' Association Memorial Plaques has been going on for decades.

The Plaque which was removed from auction today is just one of many stolen over the years.

Is it ethical that their sale should be facilitated?
