This is something I had forgotten I had done. Harry Patch’s autograph the day I met him in 1998 and then his autograph 10 years later when he was aged 110!

Oh my lord! I haven’t looked through these for the best part of 20 years. My interviews, or at least one box of them. Two other boxes are nicely stacked but this was is a mess. Gosh, this takes me back! Interviews and names I now half forget. War

My Old Front Line Podcast isn't scripted so I'm actually enjoying reading the new podcast transcripts provided by Apple Podcasts, and reading this bit again about the Great War veterans I knew brought a lump to my throat, just as when I was recording it. I was so lucky back then.

This is the world's oldest colour film. It was filmed by inventor Edward Turner 123 years ago, between 1901 & 1902 in Brighton & Hove, Houslow and Knightsbridge, London. Edward died suddenly in 1903 aged just 29. His historic colour films were only re-discovered in 2012.

Up at the Steenbeek in front of Langemarck paying respects to Harry Patch and his 7th DCLI comrades. What a lovely man he was. Such fond memories of our times together on the battlefield. It’s only now now I realise what an honour it truly was.

As it's I must select a book from my favourite author and Historian Richard van Emden. The 2021 revised edition of Boy Soldiers is a culmination of decades of work and research by the author on this subject (and his hobby!).
It really is a masterpiece.

‘The Cellar House of Pervyse’, by Elsie Knocker (later Baroness T’Serclaes) & Mairi Chisolm - two remarkable women who ran a Belgian Army first aid post during the FWW, signed by both and many of their fellow medical staff and patients. From GWH Collection📕

Wow, yesterday I saw this amazing piece of history at the British Museum’s ‘Legion’ exhibition. It’s the only known surviving example of a semi-cylindrical shield used by Roman legionaries!

This fabulously painted ‘scutum’ shield from the early AD 200s, is made of leather…

Fascinating morning talking to Richard van Emden about his book 'Boy Soldiers'. Richard discusses some of the lads he interviewed and we talk about Sidney Lewis aged 13 and how some of them were brought back from the trenches. Podcast out later this week. .

Crime! It has always been around. This particularly dark and egregious episode took place in 1933. For it to make the London newspapers only goes to underline the seriousness of the man’s actions!!!

Is it possible that this player might not be quite as injured as he is making out? I may be doing him an injustice, of course….

I was going to bid on this collection of some 500 soldier’s own photographs today. Imagined I might have to bid £1800 at least. Not even close! Some great images but enough there for 11k when fees are included? Bonkers.

Boy soldier of ? Really looked like it when I saw this pic on eBay. Took a while to track this lad down. Looks about 14 but turned out to be 19, even 20 when the picture was taken. I would never have believed it. Sydney Weldon Christmas of the 6th Royal West Kents.

This week's blast from the past is THE SUVLA LANDINGS, 1915. A multi-layered cock-up of biblical proportions, but could it ever really have succeeded? Make your own mind up! Please repost! open.spotify.com/episode/3CTB2E…

The theft and sale of Old Contemptibles' Association Memorial Plaques has been going on for decades.

The Plaque which was removed from auction today is just one of many stolen over the years.

Is it ethical that their sale should be facilitated?
