Sorry I've not been around to delight you with enhanced photography this week, but I've been mostly confined to my bed for the last 4 days. And I think I've slept 90 hours of that! I've had a pretty major relapse of long-term health issues and haven't been able to work on my

This surprisingly contemporary-looking portrait was taken 106 years ago this month - back in July 1917 - during the height of World War One. He is a Senegalese cook for the French army in Soissons, France, photographed via autochrome by Fernand Cuville. (It is not colourised)

Friday 22nd June 1917: This is the 37-year-old Sar Amadou, a Senegalese soldier posted to the French army's 7th artillery regiment near Ballersdorf, in Alsace, eastern France, during the Great War. I've enhanced this autochrome portrait by Paul Castelnau, which is not colourised.

Today we travel back 106 years to the Great War. I have enhanced for you this lovely autochrome portrait of a sergeant of the 17th Indochinese Tirailleurs Regiment at Soissons, in Aisne, France; taken in June 1917 by Fernand Cuville. It is original colour, not colourised.

This is Saturday 16th June 1917. I have enhanced for you an autochrome by Paul Castelnau, taken during the Great War. These are Senegalese soldiers serving as colonial forces in the French Army, resting near the front line at Saint-Ulrich, France. Original colour, not colourised.

A young American recruit in the First World War, taken over a century ago at Soissons in France. This is an enhancement of an original colour autochrome plate, taken by Fernand Cuville in 1917, and hasn't been colourised.

Over a million Indian troops fought in the British India Army during the Great War (1914-1918). I've cleaned this autochrome of Sikh & Muslim soldiers from the Punjab, taken in France 106 years ago by Jean-Baptiste Tournassoud. It is original colour from 1917 and not colourised.

This is the world's first ever colour photograph. Taken 163 years ago - way back in 1861 - I have cleaned-up this colour image of a tartan rosette, which was photographed by Thomas Sutton using the 3-filter colour method theorised by James Clark Maxwell.

It's rare for me to colourise images, but a decade back I did do a small number for Twitter. I found this enhancement on my harddrive - a portrait of Abraham Lincoln which I coloured back in 2011. I thought it quite striking, so I'm re-sharing it with you.

Today I whisk you back to a misty Edwardian morning and this wonderful autochrome by Julien Gérardin. It was taken around 1910 and (to my mind) seems to show a lady playing hide & seek behind a tree. What story does it say to you? It is original colour (not colourised).

Time travel with me today, as I whisk you back 113 years for afternoon tea in Belgium in 1910. I have enhanced this wonderful autochrome by Paul Sano, showing the photographer Charles Corbet taking afternoon tea with his wife Elisabeth. It was taken in colour & is not colourised.
