A long-anticipated and richly detailed study of society, urbanization, and gender relations in post-Korean War North Korea. Why end at 1965 though? This is a key question that the book never quite answered for me. Still, much to recommend here for folks interested in the DPRK.

Every conversation I've had with other early modern historians in the last year or so circles back to the enraging discrepancy between the astonishing quality of the work that grad students and postdocs are doing, and the near total absence of tenure track jobs for them.
