Meeting expectations requires community and partnership.

When the Talmud asks for a proof text for an obligation to listen to the rabbis, it cites two verses. "Do not veer from what they tell you, right or left." And, "ask you father, and he will tell you..." The 1st is a top down type authority, the 2nd is a bottom up.

I am deeply saddened to share the passing of Rabbi Alvin Kass, our Chief Chaplain, and one of the longest-serving members of the New York City Police Department. Rabbi Kass joined the NYPD in 1966, at the age of 30, becoming the youngest chaplain in the Department’s history.

How could any committed Jew have a problem with this? Our engagement in foreign religious ritual - frankly, even our entry into foreign religious spaces - is expressly off limits. I don't know which faith says no shabbat dinners, but I would not go to a Christmas dinner...
