#QUEERTHEBALLET STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT DECISION

Ballet dancers get abortions. Abortions have and will continue to save lives in the dance field. Abortions have made many ballet careers possible. (1/4)

The ballet field has been eerily quiet about Roe. I have yet to see any companies speak out. I have yet to see any policies to protect dancers’ abortion access. I have yet to see anything written by Dance Magazine or Pointe Magazine. (2/4)

It seems to me that some people and institutions are more comfortable with defending men like Balanchine who’ve pressured dancers to get abortions than defending dancers’ right to make that choice on their own. (3/4)

As of now, ballet institutions are demonstrating that they are okay with dancers bodily autonomy being taken away— in and out of the studio. (4/4)

Since we’re talking about Lesbian Dance Theory, did you know about Catherine Devillier? A Black woman who danced for the Imperial Theatre and the Ballets Russes and a big ol’ lesbian. Maybe also the first Black choreographer working in the UK?
