I am now aware of 4 major silicon valley companies building an internal distributed OLTP DBMS. Each story is almost the same: 1. They want a version of Spanner w/o TrueTime. 2. They evaluated CockroachDB + TiDB + @Comdb2 + @YugaByte + FoundationDB but decided to build their own

This joke is probably ancient but news to me: An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first asks for a beer. The second asks for half a beer. The third, a quarter. Before the next one can order the barman pours two beers, looks over and says "know your limits."
