How can Coalition & Labor govts not only stand by & watch the wholesale destruction of the Great Barrier Reef but actively lobby AGAINST listing it as 'in danger' AND keep subsidising & approving the fossil fuel projects that are killing it?

To deliver a low emissions economy, the NZEA legislation would need to change so the Authority can achieve the mandate set for it. Or the Govt could reduce the entire scope of the NZEA so it is only designed to support workers in the transition to a low emissions economy. 🤷 11/

Unfortunately the proposed NZEA probably won't deliver a “net zero” economy.

This bill may be another example of how the Govt does some ‘good’ things (supporting power station workers) to distract from all the 'bad' things (bankrolling fossil fuels). 10/ twitter.com/TheAusInstitut…

But let’s remember: there are no jobs on a dead planet. All workers are vulnerable to climate change.

How can the NZEA meaningfully transition workers out of fossil fuels when the govt is trying to create NEW fossil fuel jobs by approving gas & coal projects? 9/

Delivering an entire “Net Zero” economy is welcome but it is a BIG task.

The Australia Institute found a number of issues about what this legislation is aiming to achieve and how, raised in our submission to the Net Zero Economy Authority Bill 2024. 2/

The Australian Government has introduced its long-awaited Net Zero Economy Agency legislation to parliament.

Is this bill the catalyst for Australia's low emissions economy or will it open the door to more state-sponsored greenwash? 🤔 🧵

“It is cheaper to greenwash in Australia than not.”

Polly Hemming explains how the government’s certification scheme, Climate Active, makes it cheaper & easier for businesses to offset their way to “carbon neutrality” than to invest in reducing real emissions.

In a biodiversity crisis 🇦🇺 Govt has opened the gate for bulldozers to rip up and destroy spectacular habitat at Lee Point🤯

This isn't 'nature positive' as promised by Labor. It's the same nature destruction we saw from the Coalition.

We need enviro law reform in this term.

George Monbiot Polly Hemming Gavin Miller Australia Institute Thanks George. It would be wonderful to host you via zoom if you can make it work. This year is our 30th anniversary of using good evidence and arguments to rebut the neoliberal nonsense that dominates our public debates. An event with you would be a real highlight for a big year

The Albanese Govt were in the AAT yesterday arguing that the Australian public should not have access to documents that reveal Govt mistakes, because it could embarrass them internationally. If they’re successful, I’ll be calling it “the cover-up” precedent.

When asked by 💚🌏 Sarah Hanson-Young if the term 'carbon neutral' is misleading the ACCC appears to concede that it probably is. Polling by the Australia Institute showed 85% of people have heard the term carbon neutral but only 33% say they know what it means. 9/

I'm in the The Sydney Morning Herald today making the point that talking about violence, and telling boys and men to change, is not a prevention strategy. Government needs to take action at the level of policy and regulation. smh.com.au/politics/feder…

Interested to understand what “other priorities” Govt needs to balance in the budget that are more important than looking after ppl currently having to skip meals to survive on so-called safety net support payments.

For everyone following Lee Point, the bulldozers have arrived on site this morning.

Over 270 bird species, including the endangered Gouldian Finch, live here. This is a monumental failure of our environmental laws.

With final hearings this week, for the communities involved, the outcome is a question of survival.
