There’s a thin line between the foster system and the juvenile & criminal legal systems—and Black children disproportionately cross over—because family policing drives them there.

In their 2019 paper, Chetty et al find a gap in economic mobility between Black and White males. In our paper, Rourke OBrien & I show that municipal police is a key explanation for why we observe a racial mobility gap for males (but not females). OA Roger McIntyre: doi.org/10.1016/j.rssm…

This explanation makes much more sense than the "absence of father figures" explanation that the original paper and reporting emphasized.
