Modern commerce and advertising focus almost exclusively on the frivolous and superficial. More genuine and higher level human needs, like good physical and mental health, creative expression, a sense of community, and the opportunity for self-realization, are neglected.

Capitalism must evolve to focus on the higher levels of Maslow's hierarchy of human needs, rather than heavily focusing on the sale of trivial products. In the Internet era's attention based economy, we have the potential to both satisfy and fail at this goal, unlike ever before

With the Internet, the ability to sell or distribute directly to consumer, is open to essentially anyone and everyone. In theory, this now means that the individual can more easily sell, create and share things that perhaps wouldn't otherwise be successful at a mass retail level

The Internet enables individuals to distribute films, literature, music and more, entirely independent and direct to an audience, with no corporate influence that might otherwise strip the creative project of all its nuance in order to appeal to the widest possible audience.
