Context: the building’s history is marked by DOB’s countless code enforcement failures: certificates of occupancy (C of O) that have never reflected reality; ignoring outrageously unsafe conditions. Each of these dangerous, illegal gas heaters is in a separate apartment we saw.

Illegal gas lines run through the building. The landlord charges tenants flat gas charges and tells them to never contact National Grid if they have an issue. Residents told me that in the many years they’ve lived there, National Grid has not once come to inspect the gas lines.

Another resident has a disability. She lost her leg years ago and had to rely on a wheelchair while living there. When she sought a Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE), the landlord tried to evict her for it. Her unsafe apartment still doesn’t accommodate her disability.

The hazardous conditions—lack of fire-safe doors, gas heaters in apartments, exhaust pipes close to apt windows so carbon monoxide flows back into apartments—pose a constant risk to residents’ lives. Mgmt painted over the sprinkler system, which hasn’t been tested in 10+ years.

We need Department of Buildings to act immediately to enforce the law, protect these residents and make 11-27 Arion Pl safe.
