The infection is caused by a parasite [plasmodium]. Only a female Anopheles mosquito can transmit malaria, and only when it has been infected through a previous blood meal taken from an infected person.

There are 5 Plasmodium parasite species that cause malaria in humans. P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. knowlesi. P. falciparum and P. vivax pose the greatest threat. P. falciparum is the deadliest and most prevalent on the African continent.

Early diagnosis and treatment of malaria reduces disease burden, prevents deaths, and contributes to reducing transmission. If you suspect you have malaria, visit the hospital and seek medical attention, as malaria must be confirmed through diagnostic testing before treatment.
