Yesterday the The Telegraph published a comment piece by Viscount Matt Ridley about renewable energy, littered with misleading claims. What to make of it? 🧵

This is very good on the need to reform Britain’s system of environmental protection, which is very good at producing paperwork, but isn’t particularly good at protecting nature. thetimes.com/article/6db6ad…

This is a bit unfair. Zonal Pricing was a policy proposed under the Conservative Government. It's not something the Labour manifesto committed to, or Ed Miliband or any member of the Labour Cabinet have ever pledged to do. telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/…

The most popular decisions Govt have made so far are the ones which will increase investment in renewables 👇 True for 2024 Labour voters, and those considering switching to them next time

Thing is, it does matter that the average wind turbine today powers 4x as many homes, at much lower cost, than those built in 2010. Just as it matters that the price of battery storage, which helps manage their intermittency, is down 80% in real terms since 2010.

It was just over a year ago Keir Starmer visited Nova Innovation in Edinburgh & pledged to support the UK's innovative tidal stream sector. Today, NOVA agreed Govt contracts to develop three new projects in the UK, building on their recent developments in Canada and France.

Oh dear, some pretty major mistakes made in this The Telegraph article on the Government renewables auction results today. Some mistakes have been spotted and it's already undergone hefty revisions (see below) - but it remains fundamentally misleading. Here's what it got wrong 🧵
