Each day at dusk, as the last of the light fades from the London sky, Soane’s use of toplighting creates a quietly dramatic effect: highlighting details, recesses and hidden levels, giving his collection a depth and presence that, even in near-darkness, remains magical! 🌙✨

These rare visions of London were some of the last items John Soane ever collected! ✨

Weeks before he died, he spent £500 on the drawings collection of his late friend and architectural mentor, George Dance the Younger – including 1,342 glorious drawings by Dance’s office. 😍

The first live Emus in Tring Park were a pair imported from Australia, given to Walter by Sir Cyril Flower (Lord Battersea) in 1890. They roamed the park alongside the rhea, cassowary and wallaby. This image shows some emu with a keeper, Mr Marcham around that time.

Paperwork's all done, so I'm looking forward to starting 2 years as postdoctoral researcher with Mapping Museums Lab. Wish Prof Fiona Candlin and I luck as we try to find out what's happened to the collections of hundreds of closed museums ...

Our cottage area hasn't changed much on the outside but inside has had several identities. It began as a home for the museum caretaker, Alfred Minall and to house Walter's books and insects. Today it is part of the public galleries, our shop and most importantly the toilets!
