There's gonna be a lot of one year anniversary of Russia's "special operation" stories tomorrow but I wanted to share a small one. One so many of you have helped make possible. We have and will continue to look out for the babushkas. funraniumlabs.com/2023/02/a-than…

To start, I urge you to honor this day by taking the time to read/listen to the stories of Marshallese people. One that often makes me cry: Lijon Eknilang, a Marshallese activist from Rongelap, and survivor of the March 1 test, who passed away in 2017. 5/ digitalcommons.law.seattleu.edu/sjsj/vol2/iss1…

Spring Break is over, so it’s time to calibrate the magnetic field! At X-band (~9 GHz), DPPH is a common g-value standard. I purified/prepared this DPPH sample 15 years ago (!!) by recrystallizing in carbon disulfide, removing the oxygen and sealing. #RealTimeChem

A reminder that Elsevier made $10.5 BILLION in 2022 from selling your academic journals and articles behind paywalls, and make more profit than Amazon, Google, and Apple every year… And paid the academics who wrote the articles $0 And paid the reviewers of the articles $0

I'll never forget that time I couldn't access my own (paid for) open access paper because Elsevier blocked all Swedish institutions as a fee negotiation technique

As many of you will know, the exceptional Prof Nick Beresford died last year following a year-long battle with #cancer. Here we reflect on Nick's life and his positive influence on the lives of so many friends and colleagues worldwide: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…. UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology

With another semester ending, here's your annual reminder that teaching evaluations systemically disadvantage women. Even when controlling for grades and other factors, students (esp. males) consistently give female professors lower scores. This can have serious ramifications.🧵

As teaching evaluation season is upon us, a reminder that they can be incredibly biased. This is readily visualized using benschmidt.org, which lets you search ratings by keyword. Here I used common gender-neutral terms for intelligence - all used more often for males.🧵

As a corollary to today's news, I think that CIHR/NSERC/SSHRC grants should request the new stipend levels in the 2024 budget (MSc $27K, PhD $40K and PDF $70K) as the bare minimum in their budget for trainees. As a reviewer, I will not question this. It is only fair and equitable
