Day 2 of exploring shapes. Firsties made shapes on geoboards & solved an inquiry on what attributes make a square, a rectangle, & a triangle (closed shapes, number of corners & sides, measured length by counting units of each side, etc). #groWHere Weddington Hills
Tested out our inquiry using the scientific method. Predicted how a tall vs short ramp affected how the marble moves. Then we tested for speed & distance on each ramp 3x. After reflecting, kids wanted to make their own ramps during dismissal! Weddington Hills Mary Hooks
In science, we inquired about how something balances. Kids loved the special bird! The next morning during soft start, kids voluntarily built towers out of various blocks & cups to test out their stability. #groWHere Weddington Hills Mary Hooks
Cat Connections! A high school volunteer & 3rd grade friends helped my Firsties prep for our upcoming IB market day. Together, they made flowers out of pipe cleaners & wrapping tissue paper to “sell” at our farmers’ market. These turned out so cute! 💐 Weddington Hills Mary Hooks
Yay for Lucky Charms cereal as sweet bookends on this “long” week coming back from spring break! Kids snacked on St. Patty’s Day/Monday during independent reading activities & then had leftovers on Friday during their Letterland test. Yum! 🍀🌈#groWHere Weddington Hills
In Letterland, we learned about how the suffix -ed made 3 different sounds. We went back to the basics to stretch our sounds in front of the mirror to identify mouth shapes. #groWHere Weddington Hills
I shared a bit of my Chinese-Malaysian culture at a booth at our school’s Heritage Night. #groWHere Weddington Hills
Conducted a combination of art techniques at Heritage Night with wax crayons, washable markers, and water to mimic Malaysian batik making. Stay tuned for results! #growHere Weddington Hills
I was blessed to witness families bond through the Heritage Night craft. The big reveal at the end when I peeled the paper off the whiteboard got many gasps. They saw the connection in the batik making process as the wax blocked colors from dyeing the paper. Weddington Hills
Heritage Night success! We mimicked the process of Malaysian batik textile art in a condensed activity: Draw designs on paper with wax crayons, add colors with washable markers on a whiteboard, then spray the whiteboard with water to stamp the paper. #groWHere Weddington Hills
3rd quarter student showcase! Families interviewed students for their career choice & hired them with a Whiskers paycheck. Kids came up with funny paycheck amounts. Then students asked adults about their jobs. We ended with a song, of course. #groWHere Weddington Hills
Tried out these new stamping tools for our final Artist Club masterpieces. We ♥️ any type of collage work. #groWHere Weddington Hills
Step 1: Sketch a playground. Step 2: Edit plans to make it accessible. Step 3: Build it. Step 4: Label parts of the playground that demonstrate push & pull. #groWHere Weddington Hills Mary Hooks
