What is happening in Tennessee is an authoritarian nightmare: a supermajority voting to expel members of the minority for participating in a peaceful protest, while their own members who have committed far worse infractions are protected. Actual (not imagined) tyranny.

Every American should watch this and heed his warning. We are losing our democracy. It starts in Tennessee, but it won’t end there.

NASHVILLE, Monday…

An elementary school. A high school. A college. A church. A synagogue. A grocery store. A post office. A business. A restaurant. A movie theater. A dance studio. A bar. A nightclub. A concert. A military base. A farm. A bank.

It’s morally insane that in Tennessee they can pass laws to ban books, ban conversations about racism and bias in schools, ban drag shows, and even try to ban Black legislators they disagree with… but we can’t pass a ban on militarized guns from terrorizing our communities…

71% of TN voters are for Extreme Risk laws. 82% for safe storage laws. 88% for universal background checks. Only question this week is whether legislature will represent TN or is instead entirely captured by a narrow minority of extremists ideologically opposed to common sense.

Today on the House floor, we’ll be voting on HB 1202 to allow teachers to carry guns in schools. Is this really the direction we want to go as a state— more guns in schools? This is an irresponsible response to school shootings and will not keep students safe. This is madness.

The TN Capitol - where concerned mothers are disrespected, legislators are silenced, signs are prohibited while guns are allowed, and bills aren’t even posted for public review. And that was all in one night. TN, until we break this GOP supermajority, it will only get worse. 🗳️

If the people most actively demanding equity and justice are leaving our organization and the people refusing to embrace and enact equity and justice are staying, we have failed as leaders.

It's hard to think of anything in modern urban planning that's failed harder than attempts to preserve neighborhood demographics with low-density zoning, like Metro Planning has tried — and is in the process of doubling down on — in Edgehill. 86% Black to 14% Black in 20 years.
