Seth Lawrence Would you want a teacher to say that the only way to do 999+999 is to "carry the 1" multiple times when it may make more sense to just "give 1 to the other number" to make it 1000+998? Making tens is important in building number sense.

A reminder that there are MANY valid ways of doing arithmetic so if we just focus on standard algorithms as the only way, it makes sense that a lot of people don't feel like they're a math person because their ways, or ways that might make more sense to them, aren't being taught.
