Student leaders updating our January Number Corner calendar and collection

Today we began a new unit: Light and Sound! Students first activated their background knowledge by drawing a picture to answer the question, “What is light?”

Experimenting with light! First we made predictions for what might happen when light is shone on various materials and then recorded our findings (using vocab words such as opaque, transparent, and absorbs). We tested plastic wrap, wax paper, card board, and aluminum foil.

We read the adapted fairy tale Jim and the beanstalk and then designed our own! Practicing measurements/fractions by measuring each leaf to the nearest quarter inch. We will then make a line plot of our leaf length data.

Getting creative during our many days of indoor recess!

Experimenting with prisms to show how light is refracted! We learned that the colors of the rainbow, ROYGBIV, make up white light.

We enjoyed reading our classmates Arbor Day letters! Each student wrote a letter to their Thornless Honey Locust sapling describing its life in Medina. Happy planting!
