The first play off in a major was at Prestwick in 1870 but was for 2nd and 3rd place. Bob Kirk beat Davie Strath by 4 shots over 12 holes winning £4 to Strath's £2. Strath then didnt take part in the first place play off in 1876 thinking he'd be disqualified

The first play off for a major that took lace was at the 1883 Open at Musselburgh. Willie Fernie who had taken a 10 and an 8 in normal play defeated Bob Ferguson denying him the chance to match Young Tommy's 4 in a row
