Digital deception is the main reason why regulation is needed. Think of Toby Walsh’s opening statement about the AI threat to the 50% of democracies that will have elections next year. #QandA #auspol.

Hard to escape the conclusion that those who argue about the “distasteful necessity” of war retaliation really don’t think of women and children as real people. Who defines “necessity”? #QandA #CeasefireForGazaNOW

Two trips to the visit the main players in world politics suddenly turns into “Albanese travels all the time”? #QandA #auspol

Celebrating courage through art: The essence of whistleblower David McBride's stand for truth is the courage to tell the truth. So much harder with no dedicated independent Whistleblower Authority to protect him. Congrats Kate Stevens on winning the Portia Geach Memorial Award.

I Hope the Tuvalu climate migrants are allowed to form communities that sustain their culture when they settle in Australia. Otherwise it will disappear with their inundated island. #insiders #Tuvalu #auspol

Have the refugees who have been released who have also committed a crime been locked up for longer than their equivalent prison sentence in Australia? If so… #insiders #auspol

Great work by Emma Shortis from Australia Institute tonight at the Accountability RT AGM. Pointing out that no matter which processes we have for going to war, none of it matters if the norm is unthinkingly following USA. Great point from Prof Charles Sampford. Get ANZUS peace-building

Geoffrey Watson SC on the 👇corrupting influence of money politics👇: “The people who are making these donations are not fools and are doing it for a reason. … they’re receiving more government work. It’s as simple as that.” #auspol theguardian.com/australia-news…

Australia collects twice as much money through student loan repayments, than it does through the petroleum resources rent tax, our main tax on the gas industry. Fixing the PRRT could raise billions to pay for the high-quality services we need. Let's do it! #auspol

What do big profit making businesses owe society? Big business depends on all the infrastructure, environments and people that keep society turning but don’t recognise their obligations to them. We should be legislating different incentives to change that. #QandA #CostOfLiving

When deciding to let the private sector deliver essential services to vulnerable people every govt should include in their planning the date for the Royal Commission that will be held into the abuses in the system.

Re Dutton getting more air time on #leadersdebate. Albo is judiciously not interrupting while Dutton is busy publicly damaging himself. The longer he speaks the more ammunition against him for the rest of the election campaign.

Julia Thornton (@metaporia) 's Twitter Profile Photo

#leadersdebate Has Dutton not been watching how Trump negotiates? He thinks anyone who tries to is lining up to “kiss his ass”. All Dutton’s grand plans for trading off minerals etc will swiftly come to nothing, as the point of negotiation for Trump is to humiliate his opponent.

Julia Thornton (@metaporia) 's Twitter Profile Photo

#leadersdebate Post debate panel suggests that Dutton has only apologised for one mistake. In my memory he’s apologised for the wrong policy on work from home, on sacking 41,000 public servants policy, and now for verballing the Indonesian president. Any others?

Julia Thornton (@metaporia) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Why didn’t Dutton’s daughter who is also trying to enter the housing market also get a mention. Was Dutton just ignoring women in his own family as well as in the party, or was that journalists being sexist. Same family, same problem, completely different reaction. #insiders

This article shocked me this morning. I should have known but had not realised that Dutton literally has no policies to reduce carbon emissions. It only has policies to take off any action to reduce them. #insiders theguardian.com/australia-news… #insiders

In the latest Quarterly Essay, my response to Sean Kelly's piece from the previous issue. Sean Kelly's Quarterly Essay asks whether Labor is still up for the good fight. It's a thoughtful critique of a government navigating a fragmented electorate with caution and moderation.
