I want to know their names, who and what they loved, the people they had waiting for them at home, everything they hoped for. I want to know the fabric of their days and the contexts of their lives.

These deaths somehow mean more because of the rise in anti-Asian violence related to COVID-19, but no mention of how they’re connected to the long policing of Asian sex work, which so many Asian Americans and those speaking up against anti-Asian hate endorse.

These shops were also hubs for people to gather and keep track of each other amid the anti-Chinese sentiment that fueled the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, which effectively blocked Chinese migrants for the next 80 years. At the time, Chinatown spanned just four blocks.

A recent NYT Magazine photo essay about NYC waking up included our mural w/o acknowledging the artist JESS X. SNOW and the community org Wing on Wo & Co who made it possible. This is perpetuating the invisibility of Asian America. Acknowledge who we are. Say our names.

As if it wasn’t bad enough fashion designers use Chinatown as a backdrop and people as photoshoot props, designers like Prabal Gurung are now erasing our bilingual land acknowledgements that pay respect to the Lenape people and their enduring relationship with lenapehoking
