When vicky mochama pitched the idea of sending Black journalists to the #NABJ Headquarters ✊🏾🖊️🎙️💻 📷 🎥 📝 🔈 Convention in Chicago as a ShaddCaryCentre project, it was easy to say yes. I went to Birmingham last year with institutional funding, as did بسنت عماد الدين عبدالمنعم محمود مطر, who I went with. It was soul-filling for both of us.

As one of the few racialized journalists covering sports in Canada, I have to say that as women's sports continue to thrive and grow, toxic white feminism in the women's sports ecosystem continues to thrive. If you pledge to believe in equity & intersectionality, look around you.

Watch our video on how the inaugural Mary Ann Shadd Cary Fellowship for Black Journalists came together –and why it matters. This initiative was a historic first. We built it thinking of an often-overlooked part of our industry: mid-career journalists. youtube.com/watch?v=s7rlbC…

We're glad to see the strong support, mentorship and fanfare offered to ‘young’, ‘new’ voices starting out in our industry. But how are they doing ten years in? In newsrooms, the higher you go, the fewer Black journalists you find in leadership. shaddcarycentre.com/stories

Keeping mid-career journalists with solid experience & some seniority is key to changing that. That’s why 7 of the 10 fellows are mid-career. It’s a crucial part of the pipeline to stronger journalism leadership. Our industry is better off the longer we stay in it.

Our fellowship program at @TheWalrus is part of our educational mandate. Working with the fellows is a highlight of the job for me. We have a fellowship opening for BIPOC Journalists. Deadline to apply is Friday, April 17. #CdnMediaJobs thewalrus.ca/about/careers/
