Using zoo animals as a metaphor is funny because being a keeper I know thru personal exp—and thru study—that well fed animals ranging from elephants and primates to crocodiles, fish, and lizards will work for the sheer enrichment of it, even foregoing rewards. We're not different

Gobsmacking statistic in this story: “While city pools and splash pads consume almost 2 million gallons of water over the course of a summer, a single Exxon plastics plant consumes 13 million gallons per day.”

I wrote about this in my newsletter. The Weather Service didn't launch balloons recently and got surprised by tornadoes in Kansas. DOGE cuts at NWS cut out weather balloon launches which gather data for storm prediction. You are less safe because of that choice.

This is the danger of being a socialist who has to react to the news. Youll have to write paragraphs to answer for the murder of a Brian Thompson but capitalists will never have to explain why its okay for people to die prematurely or go into debt for the sake of a health insurer

When DOGE started cutting National Weather Service staff, there were also cuts in the number of daily balloon launches to gather weather data. The graphic on the left is what went up today at 8 am EDT (1200z). The graphic on the right is from May 2, 2023.

The National Park Service ran on a $3 billion budget and generated $56 billion in economic output in 2024. That’s over $17 back for every $1 invested. With a record of 332 million visitors last year, Americans clearly care about their parks and expect them to be funded.

Your periodic reminder the Laurelhurst neighbors chose to kill sick children because they moved in next to a hospital but can’t be bothered to have helicopter noise.

Hard to see the stone arch bridge and Hennepin bridge in this picture and realize they existed when people still dreamed of a world for people

“We need to take Francesca Hong seriously.” That’s the subject line of a memo from Tom Tiffany’s consultants to his campaign, leaked to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and reported for the first time today.

As the world burns and our transit agencies hang by a thread, MORE driving subsidies are the worst idea imaginable. Driving has been the leading cause of GHG emissions, child and young adult traumatic injury and death (no close second) for a century. Subsidize🚶🚲🚉. Save lives.

It's really funny how debt is forgivable when it's tied to yachts, hedge funds, or failed businesses, but suddenly becomes a character flaw when it's tied to education, healthcare, or survival.
