Excited for our panel discussion on the status and treatment of women offenders in the Scottish criminal justice system. Speakers and chair are all here; audience is assembling. We'll be tweeting highlights as we go.

Our public meeting on women in the criminal justice system in Scotland is under way. Our first speaker, Dr Claire Methven O'Brien (speaking in a personal capacity) is explaining the legal context of women's rights and protections in the criminal justice system.

Next up in our public meeting on women in Scotland's criminal justice system is Linda Thompson from the Women's Support Project, speaking on the links between poverty, vulnerability and sexual exploitation in the criminalisation of women.

Now speaking at our public meeting on women in the criminal justice system, former prison governor Rhona Hotchkiss starts with some stats: where in Scotland are women prisoners held (most in prisons rather than the two newer community units), and what are the demographics?

Our final speaker, Scottish Labour justice spokesperson Pauline McNeill MSP, starts with an elegant tribute to the work of LWD. Thanks, Pauline. Goes on to note the sharp rise in reported rape and attempted rape in the lifetime of the current parliament.

Now onto Q&As at our public meeting on women in the Scottish criminal justice system. Lively discussion includes how the rights of women prisoners to single-sex provision have been eroded, and the Labour imperative to address the material consequences of poverty in women's lives.

Four big asks from Rhona Hotchkiss to support women in the criminal justice system: Huge investment in social housing so that all women have access to secure housing; a basic national income; fully-funded drug rehab services, and fully-funded mental health services.
