Ralph Pantozzi I wonder how far a student needs to get in math before realizing how much there is to explore. I wonder how many are completely disengaged from math long before ever getting there. I wonder how we can inspire students and open this world of possibilities before they lose interest

If you run math class having a set path you wish to follow, and a specific destination to arrive at—as most of us do—then if you’re not careful, it’s easy to only value student participation insofar as it moves you towards those goals. And the students know. And they check out.

I don’t talk about this enough so here goes. When you push against a system and it is an unjust system, you must prepare yourself mentally for the isolation and resistance that comes with that. 1/

@Edu_Historian I often think of the work of teaching as comparable to what it might like to be a lawyer who spent 90% of their time in the courtroom and was only given 10% of their time to prepare. But I suppose i might also mention that the teacher is working with 20+ cases at a time.
