This is what remains of the UNHCR office in Khartoum — a ruin among others in a city devastated by the Sudan war. Yet, we met people returning and trying to rebuild their lives — it is also for their sake that we must redouble peace efforts and mobilize more aid resources.

Govts & refugees + partners sharing examples on how stronger cooperation between countries of origin, transit & destination saves lives, ensures access to asylum & reduce risks for people on the move. Happy to facilitate this side event at the margins of the #RefugeeForum.

A great pleasure to be in Kakuma with Barham Salih on his 1st trip as High Commissioner. Despite funding cuts & other challenges, we witnessed how #Kenya’s inclusion policies on education, self-reliance, health & sport improve the lives of refugees & their hosts. #Shirika

I saw how refugees have access to healthcare, education, and play an active part in society benefiting the whole community. This is how we move from aid dependency to self-reliance. Kenya is doing its part. It needs greater international support.

Burundi is welcoming thousands of its citizens returning home after years of living as refugees. I met some of them this week, eager to start afresh but uncertain of the future. Support will help them reintegrate into their communities, rebuild their lives & live in dignity.

Three years into the war in #Sudan, women and girls still carry its heaviest weight. Violence follows them in flight and in displacement. Survivors cannot wait. Protection and dignity must come first. More here: data.unhcr.org/en/documents/d…
