Cool new article on ACT this morning in the Sunday Washington Post, with heavy mentions of ACT researchers and trainers Emily Sandoz and Jennifer Gregg. washingtonpost.com/health/2022/02…

On the week that I graduated from Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, I am so excited to share that I have accepted a place on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at UCL DClinPsy starting in September 2022! Now it's time to rest and enjoy the calm before the storm... Incredibly thankful 🙏🎉🥂🎓

Very cool systematic review of the mediators of acceptance and mindfulness based therapies for anxiety and depression. Mindful attention, decentering and acceptance mediated there effect of treatment on anxiety and depression outcomes. buff.ly/3ANZ0X5 #ACT #depression

Risk Assessments... Just repeating for those at the back: "Focus the assessment on the person's needs and how to support their immediate and long-term psychological and physical safety". Can we have a system that allows that too? Please.

If this was a tough read (it should be), try to imagine being the victim of abuse when you are already at your most vulnerable. This is shocking but not new or uncommon. We need to collectively force abusers out of our profession. They don't belong here. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-630452…

Plenty of justified outrage following #BBCPanorama’s film of staff abusing patients in a secure mental health unit. It made headline news. Investigations are under way. Staff have been suspended. But outrage alone will not prevent a repeat. Short 🧵 & TW.

While this is playing out, people are anxious - desperate - about the security of their homes & jobs, their debts, rent & benefits. This is not a political game. Economic stress is the most powerful driver of mental ill-health & suicide.

Word of advice for anyone navigating NHS at the moment: write (copious) notes, request access to records & store, chase up EVERY referral, & assume zero communication between different parts of the system.

Urgency can become a compulsion when we've experienced childhood trauma. A feeling that we need to immediately respond, that we can never rest, or that we must "fix" every issue immediately. This is our helpless inner child trying to stay safe & to be needed.

Labelling emotional distress as 'dysfunctional' makes no real psychological sense. All distress is functional if you look deep enough. At the very least it's a protest against harmful circumstances and/or unmet needs. It demands care, understanding & change - not pathologisation.

Transference is the corner-stone of depth (psychoanalytical) psychotherapy. It is also present in every human interaction that takes place. It is not a 'tool' of therapy: it is the therapy. 'I believe that it is neither correct nor useful to distinguish between transference and
