Macrophages mess with ❤️ rhythm ⚡️ transcriptomics and protein data describe 3-fold expansion of these leukocytes in patients with atrial fibrillation. Among the top expressed genes: osteopontin (SPP1), catalyzing atrial fibrosis and inflammation ❤️‍🔥 science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

In the HOMER mouse, stopping macrophage recruitment (CCR2 KO) or deleting SPP1 reduced atrial fibrillation. 👇 Targeting recruited macrophages may reduce atrial remodeling and conduction heterogeneity in afib patients.

Padam, padam. And I can tell that you're all in, cause I can hear your heart beatin' But only if you don't have too many recruited macrophages in there! Check out our new paper, a great collaboration with Matthias Nahrendorf's lab: science.org/doi/10.1126/sc… youtube.com/watch?v=p6Cnaz…

It was an honor to participate in this project with you and your team. If atrial fibrillation is ever cured, it will have to be done at the molecular level and not by increasing the number of lesions or arguing about what energy source works best. Many thanks to Science Magazine
