New acquisition! 😍 It might only be small, but this tiny fragment has a big, international story to tell. It was brought to Yorkshire in the 9th or 10th century, but its origins are far from local and show the diversity of cultural contacts in the early #medieval world. 🧵👇

A whole box containing stamped AND graffitto'd Samian ware in the Yorkshire Museum. Shame it all has no provenance but the 50+ hand carved inscriptions here are pretty epic.

This pilgrim badge shows Saint Eloi with a pilgrim. Medieval people were sometimes 'measured for a candle', a piece of string as long as they were tall was turned into a coiled candle (the spiral) & offered to a saint in return for a favour. #FindsFriday finds.org.uk/database/artef…
