👀 #AnalectaHibernica 53 (Special Issue: The Fire of 1922) Read Brian Gurrin's 'Surviving Returns from the 1813–15 Census of Ireland' to get a sense of what information from Ireland's first statutory census still exists in National Archives, Ireland. IMC
Archive Hour Q3 #archivehour Preserving the documentation done in the past is also important e.g. recent work by Digitisation team of University of Galway Library Archives & the photographs of hurling and sliotar making in the 1950s by US photographer George Pickow digital.library.universityofgalway.ie/p/ms/search?di…
Archive Hour ARA Ireland Q4 #ArchiveHour For an example of oral history work see the Tuam Oral History Project, led by my colleague Dr Sarah-Anne Buckley & others of how survivor led testimony was collected and digitally preserved and shared here at University of Galway Library Archives digital.library.universityofgalway.ie/p/ms/categorie…
Archive Hour BONUS #ArchiveHour So much to consider - There is such a rich & uniquely Irish history in performing arts here, especially circus (art, practice, craft, lifestyle, language, families) that should be actively preserved. For more see the work of ISACS and their members.
Archive Hour Q7 #ArchiveHour Maintain an ongoing dialogue & plan about how & where the material will be accessed. Avoid the archive repository as being called 'owner'. Also be honest to assess the gaps in your own collecting policy and be informed around best ways to respond to that gap.
Archive Hour Q6 #ArchiveHour There can also be a perception where Archive repositories can sometimes be a 'barrier' or considered part of 'Official' systems of control. Creating space for ICH communities to lead their own archiving, supported by our expertise, can help the process.
Q6: Trust of national institutions can be a barrier to accessing some communities. They may have been exploited in the past. But archives can work with underrepresented minority groups to assist them in preserving their own Intangible Cultural Heritage. #ArchiveHour
Archive Hour Q5 #ArchiveHour Each ICH/craft/skill depends on transmission of knowledge to survive. The ICH itself is often embodied (e.g. dance, performance) & will always change & be added to/personalised by who performs it or embodies it at a given time.
Archive Hour Q2: ITMA works closely with communities to document the tradition. It is important to build trust with all stakeholders. ITMA regularly gives presentations about the work of the archive at events. This is a great way to engage & inform communities #ArchiveHour
Archive Hour What does opera singing, seasonal droving of livestock, Al-Man’ouché flatbread, 'Sona' drawings on sand & Dabkeh dance have in common? They were all inscribed on ICH list in 2023!
Follow Archive Hour tomor as we host & cover challenge of archiving ICHs!
