If you haven't seen this happen, you probably aren't watching close enough Women surgeons have done such incredible, inspiring, amazing things for our profession...just imagine what we could do if we weren't allocating mental mind space to this BS WomenSurgeons #MedTwitter

Completely agree! We featured this paper/address in our last Mayo Clinic Vascular and Endovascular Surgery journal club. I feel lucky to be one of the many surgeons mentored by Gilbert Upchurch. Thanks for your leadership Dr. Upchurch!

‘There is nothing more profound, Keene said, than to pause the noise of the world and remember those who were willing to give everything they had in service to their country.’

Well, that’s a wrap folks! I will forever be grateful to Mayo Clinic Vascular and Endovascular Surgery for the unbeatable education and mentorship over the last two years. What a special place, and my thanks to everyone there with whom I crossed paths. Training wheels are off, now the hard learning begins!

Great job by our incoming vascular fellow @southpawsurgery presenting a case series of patients with unilateral iliac occlusion treated with FBEVAR. Uncommon and challenging but feasible. “We need to stop saying that women have worse anatomy… We don’t make stuff that fits women’s anatomy.” - Mahmoud Malas,MD,MHS. Boom. Also, we need to start making instruments that fit my trainees’s size 5.5-6.5 hands better too. #VAM21

The perception that male surgeons are more “competent” than female surgeons is so common that even I have wondered in the past if there was any truth to it. So here is a thread comparing physicians of the two genders. 1/5

Thank you for this thread. As a woman who has been a surgeon for almost 20 years it is astounding the public perception. Today I was asked if I was a surgeon -by a patient who came to MY surgery clinic! So much work to be done. Baby steps…

What happens when 2 Mayo Clinic Vascular and Endovascular Surgery alumni show up for FEVAR day? Lots of Gustavo Oderich lines—and wisdom—traded across the table in our best (worst) Brazilian accents. And of course a solid, by the book repair.

Nobody died AND I got the bumblebee coban?! What an amazing day! Also, PSA: if you want to be a total asshat after your 2nd SMA embolectomy (bc meds are $$$ and meth is cheap), please cuss at me about your diet…I’ll gleefully keep you on clears until return of mental function.

I shared this on my private social media, but I wanted to share publicly. You can be part of a fantastic training program and still be on the receiving end of treatment by bad actors that diminish who you are as both a doctor and a human being.
