How can athletes consent to be involved in sport when concussion etc is relatively likely if they dont understand what concussion etc are? Or stated differently the informed bit of consent in such sports might be a logical impossibility. 3 papers below 👇

What’s your fave fight of the year? And did you think about the worst bits of the best fights? lfhv.org/2017/02/11/we-…

It’s important we have conversations about brain injuries in combat sport gyms. Being informed is the only way people can actually consent.

It’s been a very dark start to the year for MMA. Who’s written the most considered pieces about the ‘White slap’ and the Phil Baroni case? Please post below 👇

Elite athletes' risk-taking behaviours, and the consequences these have for their health, are often not well understood or appreciated by sports fans. There is a tendency to write off athletes' injuries as unserious since, 'it's only sport'... cris.brighton.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles…

What if the things we believe about sport are myths? Or contain mythical dimensions? What does that mean for our practice? And those beliefs? More here from @DrCRMatthewsc @DrAlexChannon & colleagues - journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…

This year I am going to repeatedly make the argument that there is no such thing as informed consent to take part in heavy contact sports (🏈🥋🥊). If there is weight in my evidence & logic we will need a new way of framing peoples choice to take part in such activities.

Given the difficulties with clearly establishing links between sport & anti-violence, “how can?” is a much better way of thinking about this than the usual “here’s how it does”. More here - cbjtarget.co.uk/2023/01/17/how…

"It is important to highlight the fact that fighters’ bodies are broken down, damaged and can potentially be destroyed in the course of providing us fans with the ‘best fights’." lfhv.org/2017/02/11/we-… Repost following a busy weekend of combat sports 🥋🥊🤼🧠

The line between legitimate training for fight sports and a clear violation is often difficult to see, but in this case it is not.

Where do the limits of consent lie? Is it reasonable to argue that consenting to fight someone according to agreed rules also implies consent to fight even if/when they break them?

“There are cases, like wrestling and boxing, in which even paradigmatic violence can occur without violation of any moral right” - Robert Audi, over 50 years ago, providing some of the academic foundation to how we might understand loving fighting but hating violence 👇

Using the language/metaphors of war when talking about sport is never a good look. That becomes doubly problematic in relation to sparring. Sparring should be about cooperation, skill, development, and safety.
