You should be about to discuss the moral foundation of your science and ground those statements in empirical observations

Here’s a nice insight into what students think of the NSS. ‘If you ever want to be harassed … because you haven’t answered a survey, go to university and make it to your third year where the NSS people will start sending pigeons to your home if you do not complete this survey’!

Finding a 'higher purpose' in academia will drag you away from things others find to be significant. People may take that as a personal affort as you think past them & their world. Compassion is needed in such situations & this may result in them joining as you drive forward 🍣👽

Where social scientists invariably lead 'hard scientists' is in understanding the 'universality of hermeneutics'. And by wilfully staying ignorant to this, many 'hard scientists' miss a fundamental premise that affects all their work... that act undermines their science.

If you think social science is broken in important ways, it's incumbent on you to try and fix it (if you dont think it is broken, you aren't looking hard enough). I'm 45 next year, and the way I see it, I have a decade to make clear strides in this direction.

A break from the usual irreverent tweets about philosophy of research, methodology, & how screwed up academic systems are to revere a Vasherin Mont d'Or we held back from last season... my word, the king of cheese.

Intuition is one of the most scientific tools available to us, yet most obscure it behind a false veneer of rationality as they try to appear 'scientific'.

As it's marking season please remember to avoid marking students down for making silly mistakes. Instead, focus on their broad & detailed understanding & highlight the need to focus on attention to detail. Basically, try to be a human when you mark, not a damn nerd-robot-pedant😎

We should hold the 'faithfulness' of our research to be one of our highest ethical, moral, and intellectual concerns. THIS is how you measure quality, not nonsense metrics like REF, impact factor, etc

A consistent appeal from me over the last few years has been for social science scholars to stop describing their work as messy. I'm adding a chapter to the next book which expands & evidence that argument. If we can have brain damage & still make our work not messy, so can you👇

This academic year I have been closely connected to a female UG & female PGR not carrying on in sports that involved regular, if low-level, brain damage. They have placed their brain health over fun & I know from personal experience that's the right call. Small wins.
