Our new Reserve Manager Ben has been busy on the #PocklingtonCanal recently taking water samples from a range of locations along its length - this important monitoring work is carried out each month in order to health check the canal & target measures to improve water quality 💧

Work to extend and upgrade Cheesecake Hide at Bank Island is now complete (hopefully with a bit flooding to follow, to bring in some returning wintering waterfowl 🦆🦢). Many thanks to Ad Astra (Broadening Horizons) Ltd, our amazing team of #LDV volunteers & staff from Natural England Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Can visitors to the #LDV please be aware that our car park at Bank Island will be closed from Tuesday 7th October for a week due to carriageway works in the entranceway. Traffic lights will be in operation but with no access to the car park. Apologies for any inconvenience.

It's still an interesting time for moth trapping in the #LDV with two new species recorded this week – Scarce Bordered Straw and Four-spotted Footman (both migrants and new for the reserve). Also nice to see Merveille du Jour with five trapped over recent days Butterfly Conservation Yorkshire

👀📺This Sunday on BBC 1 Hamza’s Hidden Wild Isles is starting, looking at some of the more hidden, elusive & hard to see wildlife - it was a pleasure working with Hamza & the crew earlier in the year to capture footage of some of the more elusive species present in the #LDV.

Whilst it was a long weekend (day and night) in torrential rain back in February, it was perfect conditions for what the team wanted to pull off – make sure to tune in for this new series and see if you can spot our local NNRs like you won't have seen them before 👀📺

Following a large movement of Whooper Swans yesterday morning (92 recorded over the #LDV) it was nice to see six had arrived overnight on the limited flooding at Bank Island this morning - few Redwings starting to move too York Birding

At the weekend we hosted our first task with the Bubwith Community Action Group, who, having done a fantastic job removing balsam from the riverbanks around Bubwith Church and elsewhere through the parish, helped us with some willow management on the riverbank at North Duffield.

Great to be able to support parish based local action for #NatureRecovery - many thanks to all for their efforts on the day 👏

This week our team have been busy continuing with the coppicing work at North Duffield Carrs to help maintain clear view lines from the platform overlooking Bubwith Ings, whilst maintaining low willows with deadwood for Willow Tits & Cetti’s Warblers 🌳🪵🪓

We’ve had a run of BTO ringing recoveries lately including a young Shelduck ringed at Bank Island in December 2021 - found dead at Blackness, Falkirk on 20th September this year, 285 km to the NW York Birding

We're pleased to say it's been a bumper year for Chiffchaffs with good breeding productivity - one ringed in the #LDV on 11th August was recaught by ringers on its way south on 21st September, at Hornchurch, Greater London – 270 km to the SE York Birding

We’ve also just received news (albeit rather unfortunate) that one of our Corncrakes (released at Bank Island on 27th June as a young male) was 'accidentially' shot in northern Spain on 23rd August – 1,271 km south of the #LDV on its way to the wintering grounds York Birding

Whilst it is unfortunate news, it does help us understand the migration routes taken by these birds – it's also only the 15th recovery from BTO ringing outside of the UK and only the second to Spain 🇪🇸 York Birding
