“Insurance will replace it” is the biggest crock of shit line in the fire service to date. People aren’t generally attached to their house when tragedy strikes. They are attached to its contents. So if it’s not us that saves what we can… then who else will it be?

Lukas Chew Absolutely agree. We should always make a conscious effort to shift our mindset to that of the person or family directly affected. All of us responders no doubt have precious items in our own homes that insurance companies could never replace for us. Put yourself in their shoes!

Oldie but a goodie. Truth is the more you train the less risky firefighting gets. No you cannot train all the risk out of this job but you can mitigate a whole hell of a lot of it, by just spending a little bit of time every shift working hands on skills. firehousevigilance.com/blog/are-fires…

Some decisions have consequences that cannot be seen in the immediate. Humility to accept responsibility and apply a solution is simple formula to mitigate damage.

This job isn’t just for men, or women black or white. It’s for people. People who have good character, a willingness to learn and bit of fitness. The day we start hiring based on race and sex is the day we fail our brothers, sisters and our community. We need good people, period.

Amazing how many people ruin the job. Ruin the schedule with part-time jobs, ruin comradery with gossip, ruin the day-to-day with toxic negativity, ruin the legacy with random and unnecessary discipline. Best job ever. Work hard. Enjoy it. It'll be over before you know it.

Lukas Chew No....but not a fan of heeling from the inside for a multitude of reasons, 2 big ones .....1) it puts you under the man climbing with tools who may drop them on you...and 2 it puts your back to the structure which I don't believe is helpful for situational awareness.
