Today’s “Jump into the Fight” photo comes courtesy of my friend, Richard “Red” Falvey. Red was one of the first prospective paratroopers to train at Toccoa and because of that, we have a plethora of amazing photos of that period, which he was kind enough to share with me. 🧵/1

This one is another favorite (I know, I say that a lot) because it depicts the physical training (PT) field in amazing detail. This is where the newly minted soldiers of the 506th, went through what was jokingly called, “Sink’s Muscle College”. /2

You can also begin to understand that the focus of the various obstacles and exercises was to make paratroopers. From the ramps that you ran up and jumped off, to the jumping platform, to the 50-foot cargo net tower and the 34-foot jump tower and mocked-up aircraft fuselage... /3

(and let's not forget the obstacle course and Currahee Mountain), everything was geared towards weeding out the weak and working out he muscles that would be required to become a paratrooper. /4

The only thing that was missing when this photo was taken was the “nutcracker” apparatus. It would seem that the pile of lumber next to the cargo net tower was probably earmarked for its construction. /5
