Headdresses were not given —they were awarded through meritorious service, providing and protecting for the tribe/nation. Each feather, like Chief Hollow Horn’s (Brûlé) — was earned. This man won his feathers defeating U.S. Forces at the Battle of Little Bighorn, June 25th, 1876.
