To my white educators: Today, you’re posting about social justice, buying antiracist books, following brown folks, and temp changing your profile pictures. (thread) Here’s what I need you to do tomorrow:

Random observation - Read alouds provided for students learning remotely are a great opportunity to expose students to different voices/accents/dialects/versions of English and can help to normalize the diversity of our language.

This article brings up some really good points. It’s nice to feel needed, but what ELs really need are entire systems of support, not just one person. We as teachers of ELs may inadvertently be perpetuating a system that fails to support the students we care so much about.

Thanks to the generosity of DEF_Dedham, school librarians will be distributing FREE books to Dedham children during free food pickup on Wednesdays. Board books to early readers, middle grade to YA, graphic novels, fiction, nonfiction, & books in Spanish. Please spread the word!

At times in my career I’ve heard variations of “Math is universal” and “ELs should be fine with math because it’s numbers.” This is my second grader’s first math assessment of the year. I can’t help but notice that it’s also a reading and English language test as well.

Alright, I’ve spent the last two years as a stay at home parent but heading back to the classroom in September. Fellow #ELL teachers in particular, any professional development books you recommend to get my head back in the game?

Our new family liaisons have helped me three times in just the first eight days of school. I’m so grateful for this new program!

I wanted to feel confident about pronouncing my #EL students’ names correctly this year, so they recorded themselves using Vocaroo and added it to a name slide. Great to practice by myself without asking the student to repeat themselves twenty times.

This 28 minute podcast describes the great tension in EL education - helping students acquire English quickly so they can access curriculum without forcing them to sacrifice their first language in the process. Highly recommend!

Level 1 and 2 #ELs worked with a partner to draw the main character’s apartment as described in the novel. Great activity to get them out of their seats and looking back at the text.
