My favorite part of being a grad student is getting to mentor and learn from the undergraduate students. I had such amazing grad school mentors (e.g., Emily Sarah Sumner, PhD) and am happy to continue to share my knowledge and resources with others!

I didn't grab a photo but I presented my dissertation proposal to my supervisory committee today and we had an engaging discussion on how to move forward with my dissertation work exploring the role of parent math anxiety for parent-child math interactions!

Grad student math is never having any money but always having money for a coffee or beer.

In my first year, I decided to start up a coding project with two undergraduate research assistants on coding parenting behaviors during a parent-child interaction. Four years later (and through a pandemic), I can proudly say that we have coded 135 parent-child interactions!

My dissertation looks at the relationship between some cognitive predictors and strategy flexibility in algebra. I would love to present it as part of a symposium on strategy selection/algebra/EF-Math at #CDS2024 I am wondering if anyone would be interested.

I somehow got two of the most important things of my life done today: 1) submitting my dissertation paper to my committee & 2) mailing out my wedding invitations.

I think it has finally sunk in that as of Monday, April 15th I successfully defended my dissertation! Thanks to all who attended and supported me along the way! I am especially grateful for my wonderful advisor Jenna Finch Looking forward to the future and next steps!

Congrats to UC Irvine alum Kimia Akhavein ('16 BA psychology; '18 post-baccalaureate psychological science), who recently began a postdoctoral fellowship in research in mathematics education at SMU Simmons School. She worked in UCI Associate Prof J. Zoe Klemfuss' Child Narratives Lab.
