Systemic racism and police brutality in this country must end. I’m personally donating $500,000 to Black Lives Matter (BLM) to fight racial injustice. I’ll also match every Dropbox employee’s donation on top of the company’s match.

Growing up with a black sibling this is a topic that really hits deep 💔 As Canadians we pride ourselves in living by example but we also risk being complacent, to think that “it’s not as bad as the US” or we can’t change it or that it’s not happening in our backyard (it 100% is)

Are you confused about the role of type I interferons (IFN) in #SARS_CoV_2 infection? Here is my speculation on what makes IFN-I helpful vs. harmful in #COVID19 patients - it comes down to timing and dose. A short thread. All figures made by BioRender & Annsea Park (1/n)

So proud of how far BioRender has come thanks to our incredible team. We launched 3 years ago w/ just a handful of icons and today we save scientists >1 million hrs every month (time otherwise spent in PPT) 🙏🏽 I hope this helps you in your next project! 💙biorender.com

I completely lose all concept of time whilst engrossed in making figures in Biorender. Have I been searching through icons for 4 hours or 4 days? When did I last eat? What month is it?

Hi everyone! I’m Shiz Aoki 🔬🖌️, medical illustrator of 12+ years, previously National Geographic & Hopkins Medicine, now co-founder & CEO BioRender. Excited to be back hosting IAmSciComm, this time with a focus on (arguably) the most important design element in a successful science figure.. color!🎨

A thread on understanding the importance of 'complementary colors' in science figures 🎨👇🏼 (tl;dr, it will enhance color harmony, make your data 'pop', highlight antagonistic reactions, and keep your images color-blind accessible)

A few examples of complementary colors (blue+orange) applied to effective science figures. Notice how even the small PD1 and CD19 proteins 'pop' against the blue NK cell (the other proteins just sort of 'sink back' into the background)

A good rule of thumb for picking colors: keep to 'low saturation' (neutral) color palette, and only high saturation for the focal point of your story 🎨 (notice how in this before/after, the RAS-GTP really 'pops' when the rest of the colors in the figure are neutralized)

We're striving to make BioRender entirely colorblind-friendly. This week we launched unlimited colors with hex codes & labels for every icon in the app🎨 biorender.com Tip if you're not colorblind: preview your figure in black & white to verify contrast & accessibility
