A volunteer who walked miles hunting for one of Britain's rarest moths was stunned to find it living in his own garden! I love this story because Butterfly Conservation ๐Ÿฆ‹ volunteers are ace, & because moths constantly confound us! shorturl.at/8W7XW

Nice to share some moths from Alice Blanche Balfour's former East Lothian home, with historian Donald L. Opitz who has done much research highlighting the significant scientific contributions of the female members of the Balfour family. #womeninSTEM

From moth trap to museum! Thanks Donald L. Opitz for joining us for some Insect Week fun. It was great to get some social history insights into the life & legacy of moth-ing legend Alice B Balfour, and to be able to share some of our wonderful local moths in return. #MothsMatter

Some fascinating camouflaged caterpillars at Lauriston Farm: Herald moth looking like the long green willow leaves on which it is feeding; and Chamomile shark moth with its striking disruptive camouflage on mayweed flowers - obvious close up but blending in at distance #edinburgh

Caterpillar of Holly blue butterfly (Celastrina argiolus) on Ivy flower buds today at Lauriston Farm #Edinburgh - the typical feeding damage is visible - the larva makes a small hole in each bud and eats out the nutritious flower developing within

The Old Lady of North Berwick have now been and gone for 2024. At first I bemoaned how few there were, following a couple of yrs with bumper counts. But looking at the data (red line) ๐Ÿค“ this year wasn't that bad! How will they do next year? #Data #ShiftingBaseline #MothsMatter
